Bedside Table

This bedside table is one piece of a bedroom suite executed by Kidd Ellis Decorative Painting, Barrie, ON Canada. It appeared in the April 1999 issue of Canadian Living magazine.

The furniture had been stripped when the artists received it. It was painted with two coats of white flat latex paint. The acanthus leaves from the Furniture Set stencil were painted on either side of the pulls. Aluminim leaf was applied in a broken pattern to edges and raised areas.

Clear paste wax was tinted with grey artist oil and two coats were applied to all surfaces with a soft rag, allowing it to dry after each coat. Two coats of clear wax (untinted) were applied. When dry the surface was buffed.

Office Wall

This is one of the walls in the Sims Design office. The walls were based in taupe, to the top of the cabinetry, then sponged with a slightly darker colour. A sky was painted above the taupe on the vaulted ceiling.

We stencilled the Stone Face and Cascading Ivy first, then the Block Wall. Stencilling by Sharon Sims, Sims Design assisted by Devin Sims.

Oxidized Metals

For a heavier, old world look consider stencilling on different Faux backgrounds.

Here we have painted Historic Filigree and Acanthus Moulding over oxidized metal backgrounds. The Rust and Verdigris finishes were accomplished using Antiquing Sets from Modern Options.

Relief Stencilling

A new and exciting use of stencils is creating relief using any of the variety of plasters on the market today.

The first project is a small wooden mirror. With the stencil held in place by repositionable adhesive, drywall compound was skimmed over the surface of the stencil. When dry, the relief was sanded lightly and painted off white. With the stencil back in place the pattern was stencilled. The stencil used is
Mosaic Border.

An existing cabinet door was given a new look with paint and plaster. The door should be washed thoroughly, to remove grease and dirt. Prime with a high bond primer. We used XIM. The stencil used is
Victorian Panel Set. With the stencil held in place by repositionable adhesive, plaster was skimmed over the surface of the stencil. When dry, the cabinet was painted with semi-gloss latex house paint. When dry, an antiquing solution was rolled on and wiped off. Finally the doors were sealed with two coats of water based urethane.
